How to Choose a Wig

How to Choose a Wig

Choosing a wig involves several decisions that each affect how the wig looks, how it fits, and how you'll wear it day to day. The good news is that once you understand the key variables, the right choice becomes much clearer.

This guide walks you through each decision in order, from the most fundamental to the most specific.

Step 1: Human Hair or Synthetic?

This is the first and most important decision. Human hair wigs and synthetic wigs are fundamentally different products.

Choose human hair if you:

  • Want full heat styling and color flexibility
  • Plan to wear a wig daily or very frequently
  • Want the most natural look and feel
  • Are making a long-term investment

Choose synthetic if you:

  • Want a more affordable option
  • Prefer low-maintenance, style-holds-itself wear
  • Are new to wigs and exploring before committing
  • Want a specific fashion color at a lower price point

Step 2: Choose Your Construction

Construction refers to how the wig is built — specifically, where the lace is and how it's secured.

  • Lace front wigs — Sheer lace along the entire front hairline creates a natural-looking edge. Available in 13x4 and 13x6 sizes. See our lace front wigs.
  • Closure wigs — A lace closure at the crown creates a natural part. More protective than lace front. Available in 5x5 and 7x5 sizes. See our closure wigs.
  • Glueless wigs — Secured with bands and combs, no adhesive required. Great for beginners and frequent wearers. See our glueless wigs.
  • Wear & go wigs — Pre-cut lace, pre-plucked, ready to wear immediately. The simplest possible option. See our wear & go wigs.

If you're new to wigs, start with a glueless or wear & go style. They require no adhesive skills and can be put on in minutes.

Step 3: Choose Your Texture

Wig textures range from bone straight to tightly curled. The most popular options:

  • Straight — Sleek, smooth, and versatile
  • Body wave — Gentle waves, natural movement, easy to maintain. See: What Is a Body Wave Wig?
  • Water wave — Looser, flowing waves with an effortless look. See: What Is a Water Wave Wig?
  • Deep wave — Tight, defined S-waves with high volume. See: What Is a Deep Wave Wig?
  • Curly — Defined curl patterns from loose to tight
  • Kinky straight / kinky curly — Textured options that complement natural hair

Choose the texture you'd reach for most often in real life. A texture you love is one you'll actually wear.

Step 4: Choose Your Length

Wig length is measured from the root to the tip of the longest strand, following the hair's natural curve.

  • Short (8–12 inches) — Bob lengths. Easy to manage, lighter weight.
  • Medium (14–18 inches) — Shoulder to mid-back. Versatile and widely popular.
  • Long (20–26 inches) — Mid-back to waist. More dramatic, requires more maintenance.
  • Extra long (28+ inches) — Waist-length and beyond.

Consider your lifestyle. Longer wigs are heavier and require more washing time. If you're new to wigs, a medium length (16–18 inches) is a practical starting point.

Step 5: Choose Your Density

Density refers to how much hair is on the wig cap, expressed as a percentage. Higher density means more hair and more volume.

  • 130% — Light and natural-looking. Good for a subtle, everyday style.
  • 150% — The most popular density. Full but not overdone. Works for most styles and face shapes.
  • 180% — Very full and voluminous. Great for curly or wavy textures.
  • 200%+ — Maximum volume. Works best for very long styles and dramatic looks.

150% is the recommended starting point for most buyers. If you're choosing a curly or wavy texture, consider going up to 180% for a full, lush look.

Step 6: Choose Your Cap Size

Most wigs come in average cap size, which fits most head circumferences (approximately 21.5–22.5 inches). If your head is larger or smaller than average, look for wigs with adjustable bands or specific small/large cap options.

To measure your head circumference, use a soft measuring tape around your hairline, starting at your forehead and going around the back of your head.

Step 7: Consider Your Lifestyle

The best wig for you is the one that fits your actual daily life:

  • High activity / daily wear — Prioritize a glueless or wear & go style for quick on/off
  • Low maintenance preference — Synthetic or body wave human hair
  • Maximum styling flexibility — Human hair, straight or body wave
  • Protective styling — Glueless closure wig with no hairline adhesive
  • Budget-conscious — Quality synthetic wig, or a shorter human hair wig at a lower price point
