Wig Installation & Styling Guides

Installing and styling a wig well makes the difference between a look that appears natural and one that clearly doesn't. Whether you're putting on a wig for the first time or looking to refine your technique, this page brings together everything you need — from preparation basics to styling tips — with links to our full step-by-step guides.

Wig Installation Basics

Before installing any wig, a few preparation steps make a significant difference in how secure, comfortable, and natural the result looks.

Prepare Your Natural Hair

Flat, smooth natural hair creates the best base for any wig. Braid your hair into flat cornrows, flat twists, or pin curls close to the head. The flatter the base, the better the wig sits and the more natural it looks. For very short or fine hair, simply smoothing it flat is sufficient.

Put On a Wig Cap

A wig cap serves two purposes: it flattens your natural hair further and creates a surface for the wig to grip. Choose a wig cap in a color that matches your skin tone — this is especially important for lace wigs where the cap might be visible through the lace at the hairline.

Position the Wig Correctly

Hold the wig by the ear tabs and place it from front to back, positioning the front hairline at or just below your natural hairline. The hairline placement is one of the most important factors in how natural a wig looks — placing it too far forward or too far back immediately reads as artificial.

Secure Before Styling

Always ensure the wig is properly secured before beginning to style it. Styling a wig that isn't anchored properly can shift it out of position and stretch or stress the cap.

Lace Front Wig Installation

Lace front wigs require the most steps of any common wig construction, but the result — a seamless, undetectable hairline — is worth the effort.

The general process:

  1. Prepare your hair and put on a wig cap
  2. Position the wig and anchor with interior combs
  3. Trim the lace along the hairline if not pre-cut (leave 1–2mm of lace in front of the hairline)
  4. Apply adhesive or edge control along the hairline and press the lace flat
  5. Use a blow dryer on low heat to help set the lace
  6. Style the edges and baby hairs

For glueless lace front wigs, steps 4 and 5 are replaced by securing with the adjustable band and applying edge control gel to hold the lace flat without adhesive.

Glueless Wig Installation

Glueless wigs are designed to be secured without adhesive. The cap includes built-in anchoring features that hold the wig in place: an adjustable elastic band at the nape, interior combs at the front, sides, and back, and sometimes a drawstring.

The installation process is significantly simpler than a glued lace front:

  1. Prepare your hair and put on a wig cap
  2. Position the wig and press the interior combs into the wig cap or natural hair to anchor it
  3. Tighten the adjustable elastic band at the nape until the fit is snug and comfortable
  4. Apply edge control along the hairline to lay any lace flat
  5. Style as desired

Glueless wigs are ideal for daily wearers, protective styling, and anyone who wants a simpler installation process without chemical contact at the hairline.

Wear & Go Wigs

Wear & go wigs take the glueless concept to its simplest form. They come pre-cut at the lace and pre-plucked at the hairline — ready to wear straight out of the packaging with no cutting, gluing, or customization required.

Typical preparation for a wear & go wig:

  1. Flatten your natural hair and put on a wig cap
  2. Position the wig and press the interior combs into place
  3. Tighten the adjustable band at the nape
  4. Apply a small amount of edge control if desired
  5. Style or wear as-is

The entire process typically takes under five minutes once you're comfortable with it. Wear & go wigs are the best starting point for beginners and an excellent option for daily wearers who want a fast, no-fuss installation.

Wig Adjustment: Getting the Right Fit

A properly fitted wig is secure, comfortable, and looks natural. Most wigs include several adjustment features to help achieve a precise fit.

Adjustable Elastic Band

Located at the nape of the wig cap, the elastic band tightens or loosens using small hook-and-eye closures. Tighten until the wig feels secure without putting pressure on your head. The band should feel firm but comfortable — if it causes a headache, it's too tight.

Interior Combs

Most wigs include small combs sewn into the cap at the front (hairline), sides (above the ears), and back (nape). These combs grip the wig cap or your natural hair underneath to anchor the wig and prevent shifting during wear. Press each comb into place firmly but gently.

Drawstring

Some glueless wigs include a drawstring along the inside perimeter that can be tightened to cinch the cap more snugly. Pull the drawstring to tighten, tie off, and tuck the excess inside the cap.

Ear Tabs

The small fabric tabs at each side of the cap help you position the wig correctly during installation. They should sit at or just above your natural ear position. If the ear tabs sit too high or too low, the wig is not positioned correctly front-to-back.

Cap Size Considerations

Most wigs are made in average cap size (21.5–22.5 inches head circumference). If the adjustable features don't achieve a comfortable fit, you may need a petite or large cap size. See our full guide for measuring instructions.

Wig Styling

Once the wig is installed, styling brings the look together. The right techniques make the difference between a wig that looks worn and one that looks like your own hair.

Straight Styles

For a sleek straight look on a human hair wig, use a flat iron on low to medium heat with heat protectant applied. Work in small sections from root to tip with steady, smooth passes. For synthetic wigs, check the product description before applying any heat — heat-resistant fiber can be lightly straightened; standard synthetic cannot.

Curls

On human hair wigs, use a curling iron or wand on medium heat with heat protectant. Curl small sections away from the face for a natural result. Let curls cool fully before touching. On heat-resistant synthetic wigs, use low heat only and test on a hidden section first.

Waves

To enhance waves on a body wave or water wave wig, scrunch the hair lightly with a curl-enhancing product while damp and allow to air dry. Avoid brushing — brushing a wavy wig creates frizz and disrupts the wave pattern. Use your fingers to separate and define waves once dry.

Parting

The part is one of the most important styling elements for a natural-looking result. On lace front wigs, you can part freely within the lace area. On closure wigs, the part is positioned within the closure. Use a rat-tail comb to create a clean, precise part. Apply a tinted powder or concealer along the part line to create a more realistic scalp appearance.

Hairline Appearance

A natural-looking hairline requires attention to three things: lace that is properly laid flat, a plucked hairline with varied density, and softly defined baby hairs. Apply edge control along the hairline and use a small brush to lay and define baby hairs. Less is more — over-gelled, heavily defined baby hairs can look less natural than a soft, minimal style.

Heat Considerations

Human hair wigs can be heat styled freely with protectant. Standard synthetic wigs cannot. Heat-resistant synthetic wigs can tolerate low heat — always check the product description and test before full application. Heat damage to any wig is permanent and cannot be reversed.
