A well-chosen wig can look completely undetectable — but the final result often depends on how it's styled and applied rather than the wig itself. Whether you're wearing a lace front, a glueless, or a wear and go wig, these techniques will help you achieve the most natural-looking result possible.
1. Start With a Flat Base
The foundation of a natural-looking wig is a flat, smooth base underneath. Bulky or uneven natural hair under the cap creates lumps and bumps that are visible through the wig.
- Braid or flat twist your natural hair down as close to the scalp as possible
- Use a wig cap in a color that matches your skin tone at the hairline
- Smooth the wig cap flat and ensure no hair is escaping at the edges
2. Customize the Hairline
The hairline is the most important area for creating a natural result. Most wigs come with a slightly dense hairline that benefits from customization.
- Pluck the hairline — Using tweezers, gently remove a few hairs from the front hairline to thin it out and mimic the natural variation in hair density. Focus on the first 1–2 rows of hair.
- Don't over-pluck — Start conservatively. You can always remove more but can't add back.
- Bleach the knots — On lace wigs, the knots where each hair strand is tied into the lace can appear as small dark dots. Bleaching the knots lightens them so they blend with the lace and become invisible. This step significantly improves how natural the hairline looks.
3. Lay the Lace Properly
On a lace front wig, the lace needs to sit flat against the skin to look natural.
- Cut the lace as close to the hairline as possible without cutting into the hair knots
- Apply a small amount of lace glue, got2b glued, or edge control along the hairline to melt and flatten the lace
- Use a blow dryer on low heat to help set the lace flat
- Press a scarf or stocking cap over the hairline for a few minutes while it sets
For glueless wigs, secure the bands and combs properly, then use edge control along the hairline to flatten and blend without adhesive.
4. Style Your Edges
Baby hairs along the hairline are one of the most effective ways to make a wig look like your own hair. Using a small toothbrush or edge brush and a pea-sized amount of edge control or gel:
- Define a few small baby hairs along the hairline in a natural pattern
- Keep the design subtle — overly elaborate edge patterns draw attention to the fact that you're wearing a wig
- Let the edges dry before touching them
5. Customize the Part
A perfectly straight, uniform part can look unnatural. Real parts have slight variation in depth and direction.
- Use a rat tail comb to slightly rough up the part line
- Apply a small amount of concealer or foundation that matches your scalp tone along the part to fill in any gaps between hair strands
- Wig-specific scalp concealers and powders are available if you want a product designed specifically for this purpose
6. Tint or Match the Lace
Most lace comes in a standard medium brown or transparent shade that may not perfectly match every skin tone. Tinting the lace helps it disappear against your skin.
- Apply a small amount of foundation or concealer to the lace before install
- Use a lace tint spray or watercolor-based lace tint for a longer-lasting solution
- For HD lace wigs, this step is often minimal or unnecessary as the lace is already nearly invisible
7. Blend Your Edges Into the Wig
If you have natural hair visible along your edges, blending it into the wig creates a seamless look.
- Use a flat iron on a low setting to blend your natural edges with the wig hair
- Apply a small amount of edge control or pomade to smooth and unify the two
- For glueless wigs, this step is particularly important since there's no adhesive holding the hairline flat
8. Choose the Right Wig for Your Skin Tone
Hair color affects how natural a wig looks on your specific complexion. Very light wigs on dark skin tones, or very dark wigs on lighter skin tones, can look striking but draw attention to the wig. Natural-looking shades — including highlights and dimension — tend to look more realistic than single flat colors.
