How to Store a Wig

How to Store a Wig

How you store your wig between wears has a significant impact on how long it lasts and how it looks each time you put it on. Improper storage leads to tangling, matting, crushed cap construction, faded color, and shortened lifespan. The good news is that proper storage is simple once you have the right setup.

The Golden Rule: Always Store on a Wig Stand

The single best thing you can do for a wig between wears is place it on a wig stand. A wig stand:

  • Maintains the cap shape so it doesn't collapse or distort
  • Allows air circulation to prevent mustiness and odor
  • Keeps the style intact so the wig is ready to wear next time
  • Makes it easy to see and access your wig collection

Collapsible wig stands are inexpensive, stackable, and available in various sizes to fit different cap sizes. If you own multiple wigs, a tabletop wig stand or wall-mounted wig holder helps keep them organized and protected.

Short-Term Storage (Between Daily or Weekly Wears)

For wigs you wear regularly:

  • Place on a wig stand after each wear
  • Detangle gently before storing — don't leave a tangled wig on the stand overnight
  • Keep out of direct sunlight, which fades color and dries out both human hair and synthetic fibers
  • Keep away from heat sources such as radiators, heaters, and vents
  • Store in a cool, dry location with good air circulation

Long-Term Storage (Weeks or Months Without Wearing)

If you're storing a wig for an extended period:

  1. Wash and condition the wig first — Store it clean. Product buildup and oils left in the hair will degrade the fibers over time.
  2. Allow to dry completely — Never store a damp wig. Moisture promotes mildew, odor, and fiber damage.
  3. Detangle thoroughly — Work through any knots before storing so the hair doesn't mat during storage.
  4. Place in a silk or satin bag — Silk and satin create minimal friction against the hair fibers, reducing tangling and static. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture.
  5. Store on a wig stand inside the bag, or gently fold the wig into the bag if stand storage isn't practical.
  6. Keep in a cool, dark, dry location — A drawer, a wardrobe shelf, or a dedicated wig storage box all work well.

What to Avoid When Storing a Wig

  • Storing in direct sunlight — UV exposure fades color and weakens both human hair and synthetic fibers over time
  • Storing while damp — Creates mildew, odor, and fiber damage
  • Storing in a plastic bag — Traps moisture and can cause synthetic fibers to become brittle
  • Piling wigs on top of each other — Crushes the cap, distorts the style, and causes tangling between wigs
  • Leaving a wig on a mannequin head in a hot room — Prolonged heat exposure degrades both hair fiber and cap construction

Storing Multiple Wigs

If you own several wigs, organization matters:

  • Use individual wig stands for each wig, displayed on a shelf or rack
  • Label stands or bags if you have wigs that look similar
  • Rotate wigs regularly — using each wig in rotation reduces wear on any single piece
  • Keep frequently worn wigs accessible; store rarely worn wigs in bags in a cooler location

Storing Wigs While Travelling

  • Pack wigs in a dedicated wig travel case or a satin-lined bag
  • Place a small wig stand inside a hard case if traveling with a wig you want to arrive in perfect condition
  • Avoid checking wigs in luggage if possible — carry them on to prevent crushing
  • For synthetic wigs, avoid storing near warm areas of the bag (near laptops or portable chargers, for example)
