How to Install a Lace Front Wig

How to Install a Lace Front Wig

Installing a lace front wig properly makes the difference between a wig that looks natural and one that looks like it's sitting on top of your head. The process takes practice — but once you've done it a few times, it becomes quick and straightforward.

This step-by-step guide covers everything from preparing your hair to finishing the edges.

What You'll Need

  • Lace front wig
  • Wig cap (in a color matching your skin tone)
  • Scissors or lace scissors
  • Lace glue, got2b glued spray, or lace tape
  • Edge control or styling gel
  • Small brush (toothbrush or edge brush)
  • Blow dryer
  • Scalp-tone concealer or foundation (optional)
  • Rat tail comb

Step 1: Prepare Your Natural Hair

A flat, smooth base is essential for a seamless install.

  • Braid, flat twist, or cornrow your natural hair close to the scalp
  • Smooth any loose edges with edge control
  • Put on a wig cap that matches your skin tone at the hairline. Stretch it back past your hairline slightly to expose your natural hairline.

Step 2: Try the Wig on First

Before applying any adhesive, put the wig on and position it correctly.

  • Place the wig from front to back, aligning the front hairline where you want it to sit
  • Secure the back elastic band and adjust for fit
  • Press the interior combs into your wig cap or hair to anchor the wig
  • Check the positioning in a mirror — ensure the part falls where you want it and the hairline placement looks right

Mark or remember the exact position before removing the wig to apply adhesive.

Step 3: Cut the Lace

With the wig off, or very carefully with it on, trim the lace along the hairline.

  • Use lace scissors or small sharp scissors
  • Cut as close to the hairline as possible without cutting the hair knots
  • Follow the natural curve of the hairline rather than cutting in a straight line
  • Take your time — cutting too far into the hairline cannot be undone

If your wig is a wear & go wig, the lace is already pre-cut and you can skip this step.

Step 4: Apply the Adhesive

There are several adhesive options, each with different hold strength and application methods.

Lace Glue

  • Apply a thin layer of lace glue along your hairline where the lace will sit
  • Let it become tacky (30–60 seconds) before pressing the lace down
  • Press firmly with your fingers or a pressing cloth
  • Hold for 30–60 seconds until set

Got2B Glued Spray or Gel

  • Spray or apply along the hairline
  • Use a blow dryer on medium heat to activate and set the product
  • Press the lace down firmly and hold until secure

Lace Tape

  • Apply double-sided lace tape along the hairline
  • Remove the protective backing and press the lace firmly onto the tape
  • Lace tape provides a strong hold but may be less comfortable for all-day wear

Step 5: Melt and Blend the Lace

Once the adhesive is set:

  • Use a blow dryer on low heat to gently warm the lace and help it lay flat
  • Press a silk or satin scarf over the hairline for 1–2 minutes to help the lace meld into the skin
  • If the lace is visible, apply a small amount of foundation or concealer in your skin tone over the lace to camouflage it

Step 6: Style the Edges

Finish the install with edges to create a natural-looking hairline.

  • Apply a small amount of edge control along the hairline
  • Use a soft brush to define baby hairs in a natural pattern
  • Keep edges subtle for the most realistic result
  • Let set completely before touching

How Long Does a Lace Front Install Last?

A properly glued lace front install typically lasts 1–2 weeks depending on the adhesive used, your activity level, and how much you sweat. Some adhesives are designed for shorter wear; others are formulated to last longer.

For a no-glue alternative, see our guide on glueless wigs or consider a wear & go wig that requires no lace cutting or adhesive at all.
