How you care for your wig determines how long it lasts and how good it looks. Whether you wear a human hair wig daily or a synthetic wig occasionally, this guide covers every aspect of wig maintenance — washing, drying, detangling, storing, and styling.
Human Hair Wig Care vs Synthetic Wig Care
The care routines for human hair and synthetic wigs differ significantly:
- Human hair wigs need sulfate-free shampoo, moisturizing conditioner, heat protectant for styling, and regular deep conditioning to stay healthy and hydrated.
- Synthetic wigs need synthetic wig shampoo, cool water only, and air drying. They should never be exposed to heat from a blow dryer or styling tool (unless the wig is specifically labeled heat-resistant).
How to Wash a Human Hair Wig
- Detangle the wig thoroughly before washing
- Wet with cool or lukewarm water — never hot
- Apply sulfate-free shampoo and work it through with downward strokes — never scrub in circles
- Rinse thoroughly
- Apply moisturizing conditioner from mid-shaft to ends; leave for 3–5 minutes
- Rinse and gently squeeze out excess water — never wring
- Air dry on a wig stand

How to Wash a Synthetic Wig
- Detangle gently before washing
- Soak in cool water with synthetic wig shampoo for 5 minutes
- Swish gently — do not rub or scrub
- Rinse with cool water
- Apply synthetic wig conditioner and rinse
- Pat dry with a towel and air dry on a wig stand

How Often Should You Wash a Wig?
- Human hair wigs: every 7–14 wears, or when product buildup is noticeable
- Synthetic wigs: every 15–20 wears, or every 4–6 weeks with light wear
How to Detangle a Wig
Always work from ends to roots — never root to tip. Start with your fingers to loosen the worst knots, then use a wide-tooth comb from our wig tools & styling collection. Apply detangling spray or leave-in conditioner from our wig care collection to dampen the hair first for easier detangling.

How to Store a Wig
- Always store on a wig stand to maintain the cap shape and style
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources
- For long-term storage, place in a silk or satin bag
- Never pile wigs on top of each other — this crushes the cap and causes tangling

Styling Your Wig
- Human hair wigs can be heat styled with flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers. Always use a heat protectant first.
- Synthetic wigs cannot be heat styled with standard tools — heat will melt or frizz the fibers. Heat-resistant synthetic wigs can tolerate low heat (up to 250°F / 120°C).
