Wigs for Beginners: Start Here

Buying your first wig doesn't have to be overwhelming. This hub page is your complete starting point — everything you need to choose, buy, install, and care for your first wig, with links to our full guides and collections at every step.

Step 1: Choose the Right Wig

Your first four decisions are the most important: human hair or synthetic, construction type, texture, and length.

  • Human hair or synthetic? — Synthetic is more affordable and lower maintenance. Human hair looks and feels more natural and lasts longer. Read: Human Hair vs Synthetic Wigs
  • Construction — For beginners, start with a glueless or wear & go wig. No adhesive, no cutting, no experience required.
  • Texture — Straight and body wave are the most beginner-friendly. Easy to maintain, forgiving if the style gets disrupted.
  • Length — 16–18 inches is the sweet spot for a first wig. Long enough to feel impactful, short enough to be manageable. Browse: short, medium, long.

Step 2: Find Your Size

Step 5: Install Your Wig

For glueless and wear & go wigs: put on your wig cap, place the wig from front to back, press the combs in, and adjust the band until snug. That's it. For lace front wigs requiring adhesive, follow our full step-by-step: How to Install a Lace Front Wig.

Step 6: Care for Your Wig

  • Detangle before and after every wear using your wig tools
  • Wash every 2–4 weeks (synthetic) or every 7–14 wears (human hair)
  • Air dry on a wig stand — never use a blow dryer on synthetic
  • Store on a wig stand away from sunlight and heat

Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  • Choosing a wig that's too long for your first purchase
  • Skipping the wig cap — it makes a significant difference
  • Not measuring your head before ordering
  • Starting with a glued lace install — begin glueless and build from there
  • Neglecting maintenance — even synthetic wigs need regular care
